Key blanks that meet the exacting specifications of the original manufacturer are important to the engineering department of Jet Hardware. During a two-year period of research and development, key blanks and cylinders were acquired from various parts of the country to ensure different production runs. The keys and cylinders were found to be inconsistent. This often can be attributed to wear and tear on the broaches and milling cutters. Keys are usually Bitted and the pins set to the keys. Hardware consultants and locksmiths have often questioned the filing of new cylinder cores. Most likely, the key blank or broaching was off and needed correcting. Pin lengths off one or two thousandths would not require the filing due to the tolerances allowed between the core and shells |
Taking the variations into consideration, engineering decided to design the keys to the original specifications and modify them to compensate for the differences. This resulted in a key blank specifically designed to be set to the cylinder. Special milling cutters were manufactured to overcome the variations noted and to ensure that a key blank was accurate and consistent.

The "Silver Line" key blanks have been manufactured from nickel silver, whose physical properties are much stronger than brass. It lends itself to precise milling and offers a more durable and longer wearing product.
| |
| Lock manufacturers use nickel silver to match the hardness of the nickel silver used for their cylinder pins. Several major lock manufacturers use brass pins and either nickel silver or brass keys on their stock locks. Brass pins are still used when masterkeying is involved, but key blanks are furnished in nickel silver |

| Accuracy for Masterkeying: |
Masterkeying and masterkeyed locks have always been the criteria for the use of original manufacturers' key blanks by architectural hardware consultants and master locksmiths. Duplication of keys on quality blanks has assured hardware owners trouble-free operation. The Silver Line has been engineered to exceed the original lock manufacturer's 'production and to assure consistency in every key blank for all forms of masterkeying. The blanks have been made for more accurate key duplication. For the hardware consultant and master locksmith who originates or maintains key systems, using the standard wheel-type code machine or the modern punch, keys will be perfect every time. . |
The key bows have been coined and embossed, designed to create the appearance of originals. Because of design patents and trademarks, minor modifications have been made to the original's "look." However, the company has also taken the opportunity to enhance the product by coining the identification letters and numbers in lieu of stamping as the originals do. Room has been left on the bow for special identification stamping as required. Custom incising or coining is available as specifications dictate. |
